What is AI visibility? Definition, metrics and how to measure it
AI visibility is how often AI engines like ChatGPT and Gemini name your brand. Learn what it means, the metrics that matter and how to measure it.
Short answer: AI visibility is how often and how prominently AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI name your brand when people ask questions in your category. It is measured by asking those engines the questions your buyers ask and recording whether you are mentioned, where you appear, how you are described and who is named instead. A strong AI visibility means you are part of the answer; weak AI visibility means a competitor is.
For twenty years, being found online meant ranking in a list of links. Now a growing share of buyers ask an AI engine and act on the short list it gives back. AI visibility is the measure of whether your business is on that list. This guide defines it plainly, explains how it differs from SEO visibility, sets out the metrics that matter, and shows how to measure and improve it.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is the degree to which AI engines mention, recommend and cite your brand in their answers. It covers whether you appear at all, how high you appear, how favourably you are described, and how often you are chosen ahead of competitors, across the engines your buyers use.
It is sometimes called AI search visibility, LLM visibility or generative engine visibility. The practice of improving it is called Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, with Answer Engine Optimization focused on getting your content quoted directly.
Consider a buyer who asks ChatGPT, “What is the best project management tool for a small agency?” The answer names three tools. If yours is one of them, described well and near the top, your AI visibility for that question is strong. If it is not mentioned, your visibility is zero for that buyer, however well your website ranks on Google.
AI visibility vs SEO visibility
SEO visibility measures where your pages rank in a list of links. AI visibility measures whether your brand is named inside the answer. They are related, because AI engines retrieve from search indexes, but they are not the same, and you can be strong in one and invisible in the other.
| SEO visibility | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| What is measured | Page rankings in search results | Brand mentions inside AI answers |
| Unit | A page and a keyword | A brand and a buyer question |
| Where buyers look | A list of ten links | A short answer naming a few brands |
| How stable it is | Fairly stable day to day | Varies between runs, users and engines |
| Main tool | Search Console and rank trackers | An AI visibility platform |
| Success looks like | Ranking on page one | Being named, early and favourably |
The practical upshot: keep doing SEO, because it is the entry ticket to the sources AI engines read, but measure AI visibility separately, because rankings no longer tell you whether you are being recommended. Our guide to GEO versus SEO goes deeper.
Why AI visibility matters now
AI visibility matters because buyers increasingly form their shortlist inside an AI answer, before they visit any website. If you are missing from that answer, you lose the buyer without ever seeing them, and no standard analytics report will tell you.
The behaviour has gone mainstream. Google’s AI Overviews reached around 2 billion monthly users in 2025, and ChatGPT passed 700 million weekly users by mid 2025. Pew Research Center found that when an AI summary appeared in Google, people clicked a traditional result only 8 percent of the time, against 15 percent without one. And in Forrester’s 2026 Buyers’ Journey survey, 94 percent of business buyers said they used AI during their most recent purchase.
The AI visibility metrics that matter
The core AI visibility metrics are mention rate, position, share of voice, sentiment, citations and engine coverage. Together they tell you whether you appear, how well, against whom, and where.
- Mention rate: the share of your tracked buyer questions where an engine names your brand. This is the foundation of AI visibility.
- Position: where you appear in the answer. Being named first is worth far more than being the fifth name in a list.
- Share of voice: how often you are named compared with your competitors across the same questions.
- Sentiment: how the engine describes you, positively, neutrally or negatively, and whether its facts about you are right.
- Citations: whether engines link to or cite your pages as sources, which shows they trust your content.
- Engine coverage: how your visibility differs across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Many brands are strong in one engine and invisible in another.
What is an AI visibility score?
An AI visibility score combines these metrics into one number, so you can see at a glance whether AI recommends you and track it over time. At ONEGO this is the ONE Score, which runs from 0 to 100 across five engines and weights how often and how prominently you appear.
As a rough guide, a ONE Score of 67 or above is strong, 34 to 66 means you appear for some questions or engines but not others, and 33 or below means engines rarely recommend you. Two cautions apply to any visibility score. First, every vendor calculates its score differently, so scores are not comparable between tools. Second, AI answers fluctuate, so the trend matters far more than any single reading. The ONE Score explained covers the method in detail.
How to measure AI visibility
To measure AI visibility, build a list of the questions your buyers ask, ask each one in every AI engine that matters, record whether and how your brand appears, and repeat on a schedule. You can do this by hand to start, or use an AI visibility platform to do it consistently.
- List your buyer questions. Write 20 to 50 questions a real buyer asks, such as “best X for Y”, “X vs Y”, “alternatives to X” and the problems your product solves.
- Ask every engine. Run each question in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.
- Record the answer. Note whether you are named, your position, how you are described, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited.
- Score and compare. Turn the results into a mention rate and share of voice, and compare against your competitors.
- Repeat weekly. Answers change, so track the same questions over time and watch the trend.
Doing this by hand works for a first look, but it is slow, and personalised answers make it hard to repeat fairly. A platform asks the same questions consistently across all five engines and keeps the history. How to improve AI visibility
You improve AI visibility by being in the sources AI engines retrieve from and by making your content easy for them to quote. In practice that means ranking for your buyers’ real questions, writing answer first content, earning genuine mentions on third party sites engines trust, keeping your facts consistent everywhere, and letting AI crawlers reach your pages.

Common misconceptions about AI visibility
A few myths cause businesses to misjudge their AI visibility.
- “We rank on Google, so AI recommends us.” Ranking helps, but AI engines choose which brands to name inside the answer. Plenty of well ranked sites are never mentioned.
- “I asked ChatGPT once and it named us.” One answer is a single draw from a moving target. You need repeated, consistent checks to know your true visibility.
- “AI visibility is only about ChatGPT.” Buyers use several engines, and your visibility can differ sharply between them.
- “There is nothing we can do about it.” AI engines draw on public sources. Better content, consistent facts and genuine third party mentions measurably change what they say.
